Facebook in Talks to Buy Whatsapp

Published on:

Facebook may be preparing to boost its mobile services, which the company has said are a weakness at the firm, by acquisitions as opposed to organic development in-house.

Following its $1 billion purchase of the photo sharing service, Instagram, the company is now reported to be in talks with OTT messaging provider, Whatsapp.

Citing sources close to the talks, TechCruch sad that the two companies have a customer base that strongly overlaps with each other.

Whatapp's reputed 100 million daily user base would fit comfortably within Facebook's own huge size without being swamped or subsumed as often happens when a large firm buys a smaller start-up.

Whatapp is also a paid-for service, which would give Facebook an instant method of plugging its other services into an existing paid-for platform and generating revenues from mobile in a manner that it has struggled with through advertising.
