Two UK Cities to Get a Municipal Wi-Fi Network

UK based Virgin Media is reported to have secured government approval for a municipal Wi-Fi network covering the cities of Leeds and Bradford.
The public Wi-Fi network is expected to cover around 1.2 million people, reports the Financial Times. Neither the company, nor the two city councils have confirmed the news yet.
The network will be deployed as part of a government initiative to create a number of "super connected" urban hubs, but it is not being subsidised by the government. Virgin expects to cover the cost of the service from advertising, and will also generate revenue from the service by leasing offload capacity to the mobile networks.
Virgin recently deployed a Wi-Fi network on the London Underground railway, and has secured lease deals with both Vodafone and EE.
