T-Mobile May Announce US Deal for Apple's iPhone Next Week
Published on:
Speculation is rising that T-Mobile USA is on the verge of announcing a deal to sell Apple's iPhone. The company has made no secret of its desire to sell the smartphone, but recently cautioned that it would not do a deal at any price.
A research note by Merrill Lynch's Scott Craig is now saying that there is a possibility that a deal will be announced at a presentation to industry analysts next week.
The T-Mobile network is now technically capable of supporting the 3G capabilities of the iPhone, which had been limited to GSM services only -- and the company already has around 1.5 million handsets registering on its network.
Merrill Lynch's research note pointed out that a deal with T-Mobile USA would give Apple access to 98% of the U.S. post-paid market and 75% of the country's total mobile subscribers.
"While this would be incrementally positive," he writes, "any financial impact would be limited." He estimates that a T-Mobile deal would add about 4 million iPhones to his current estimate of 179 million sold in calendar 2013, boosting Apple's top line (revenue) by 1% and its bottom line (earnings per share) by 2%.
