Google is Not Buying USA Based Wi-Fi Network, Icoa

Published on:

Confusion abounds over reports that Google has paid US$400 million to buy the USA based Wi-Fi network provider, Icoa.

A press release distributed on a public newswire announced the deal, but there was no confirmation from the company itself, or from Google.

That Icoa didn't say anything is not a surprise as its press page was last updated two years ago, but Google usually spits out a short blog post announcing deals of this size.

Later, TechCruch secured a comment from Icoa, denying that it had been sold to Google.

The question then is who uploaded the fake press release to the news wires - and was it a criminal attempt to manipulate the shareprice of the company, which jumped sharply on the news, only to fall back when speculation about the veracity of the reports surfaced.
