Tajik private phone provider business booms

Tajik private mobile phone providers are outcompeting government linked providers, Avesta.tj reported November 19, quoting the Tajik Statistical Agency.
Private operators earned more than 1.2 billion TJS (US $244.7m) in January-September this year, Avesta.tj reported. That figure is almost six times the income earned by Tajiktelecom (the former state-owned phone company) and Pochtai Tochik combined in the same period at 211.1m TJS (US $43.9m).
In addition, during January through October this year, more than 2m Tajiks subscribed to internet service, while more than 8.7m subscribed to mobile phone service. Some users might have multiple subscriptions. The country's population was almost 7m in 2011, according to the World Bank.
