France Sees Fastest Mobile Subscriber Growth Rate in a Decade

­France, including its overseas territories, has 72 million mobile phone accounts at the end of September, equating to a population penetration level of 110%, according to statistics released by the telecoms regulator.

Arcep noted that the customer base grew by 7.4% in the past year, marking the strongest annual growth in the past ten years.

Within the French mainland, the number of accounts rose by 1.5 million over the past three months to stand at 69.3 million. M2M services accounted for 460,000 of that growth.

The number of accounts subscribing directly with the mobile networks was 61.4 million, with 7.8 million connected through an MVNO.

The regulator also noted that there was an 11% rise in the total volume of voice call minutes; a 28.8% rise in SMS's sent and a 58.6% rise in mobile data traffic.
