Research in Motion on Target for New BlackBerry OS Launch

Published on:

Research in Motion has announced that its delayed BlackBerry 10 operating system has passed a critical milestone and has now been handed over to the mobile networks to start testing.

The company said that over 50 unnamed mobile networks are now testing the platform in anticipation of a launch in the first quarter of next year.

The company has built the new OS to replace its legacy platforms and based it on QNX, a company that RIM bought in 2010. The company has previously said that it looks to license the OS to other companies as it seeks to turn around its finances.

Thorsten Heins, President and CEO, Research In Motion, said: "This process will continue in the coming months as more carriers around the world formally evaluate the devices and our brand new software."

"I have spent the last several weeks on the road visiting with carrier partners around the world to show them the BlackBerry 10 platform and to share with them our plans for launch. Their response has been tremendous." he added.

RIM's enterprise teams have also started to present BlackBerry 10 devices and services to its business customers.
