A month later than originally planned, the USA based mobile payments service, Isis has launched its initial trials in Austin and Salt Lake City.

Isis is a mobile commerce joint venture created by AT&T, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless. Consumers in the two trial cities can select from nine Isis Ready handsets, with an expected 11 additional handsets coming to market by the end of this year.

To use the service, consumers need a compatible handset and replacement SIM card. The NFC service is managed via an Isis Mobile Wallet app which is only available for Android smartphone users at the moment.

Users also then have to load an eligible American Express, Capital One, or Chase card into the Isis Mobile Wallet or get started with the Isis Cash card that comes in every Wallet.

"The launch of the Isis Mobile Wallet in Austin and Salt Lake City represents a milestone for both Isis and the mobile commerce industry," said Ryan Hughes, chief marketing officer, Isis. "With as many as twenty Isis Ready handsets headed to market by year end, we are experiencing an unprecedented level of support for NFC and consumer choice."
