Spanish Mobile Market Shrinks by 1.3 Million Lines in 2012

The Spanish mobile phone market has shrunk by 1.31 million lines, according to a report from the telecoms regulator, the CMT.

The mobile phone market continued to show a sharp decline, losing 226,268 connections during the month of August.

In late August, the number of mobile lines in Spain stood at 54.45 million lines, which despite the reduction in connections this year, still represents a rise of 2.1% over last August - thanks to sales last Christmas. The slow growth of mobile lines contract (postpaid), with 59,265 lines, was insufficient to offset the losses in the prepaid segment (227,876) and the datacards (57,657).

For operators, Movistar lost 274,650 lines, while Vodafone was allowed 195,290. Meanwhile, Orange won 25,400 lines, while the MVNO and Yoigo signed up 130,770 and 87,490 lines respectively.

In terms of portability by operators, Vodafone and Movistar both lost customers to the smaller networks.
