Amazon in Talks to Buy TI's Mobile Chip Business

Published on:

Amazon is said to be preparing to beef up its mobile hardware capabilities through the purchase of Texas Instruments' mobile chip business division.

Citing sources, the Israeli business news publication, Calcalist reported that the two companies are in advanced talks on the topic.

Texas Instruments had previous said that it was looking at a sale of the division, and Amazon is said to be its largest single customer. However, rival e-book reader, Nook, supplied by Barnes and Noble is also dependent on TI chips, which may raise anti-trust concerns if Amazon buys the chip division.

Texas Instruments spokeswoman, Whitney Jordi, told Calcalist that the company intends to remain active in mobile chips, but will pull out of the smartphone and tablet market.

Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi told Reuters she doubted whether Amazon wants to "become that intimately involved with hardware".
