India Government Mandates Local Suppliers for Telecoms Kit

Note -- this news article is more than a year old.

India's government has outlined its plans to offer preferential treatment to local telecoms equipment manufacturers.

All government departments and controlled agencies will have to purchase at least half of their equipment from local suppliers, with the ratio rising to 100% for some categories. Private telecoms networks are not included in the new policy, but they will be subject to a modified version shortly.

The government has been working on the policy for over a year, initially in the guise of supporting local manufacturing, but recently, the policy has been seen as more about security concerns from foreign suppliers.

Over time, even imported equipment will have to have some aspect of local manufacturing or assembly work before they can be sold to the telecoms networks.
