Another Attempt to Block Thailand's 3G License Auction
Published on:
A Thai telecoms analyst is to file a legal bid to block the forthcoming 3G license on the grounds that the auction conditions do not benefit Thais.
Anuparp Thiralarp says that the auction conditions do not meet four tests needed to benefit Thai people.
He is concerned that there are no requirements to offer a minimum speed to capacity ratio, or limits on the prices charged by the mobile networks. He also argues that the auction conditions do not clearly state how the funds are to be handed to the government, or what the specific benefit to the country from 3G services would be.
However, a member of the telecoms regulator, the NBTC told the Bangkok Post that the court is likely to reject the filing because Mr Anuparp is not affected directly by the auction.
The regulator was granted the necessary legal powers to carry out the 3G license auction in 2010 following numerous legal challenges to its predecessor.
