Microsoft Rumoured to Be Developing Own Smartphone

An increasing number of reports are suggesting that Microsoft may be working on a range of its own smartphones - which would put it in direct competition with its favoured partner, Nokia.
Most cite a report by Taiwan's China Times claiming that Microsoft is working on at least one smartphone due for releases in the first half of next year. Development work reportedly started at least four months ago.
The report also claims that Microsoft has decided that it doesn't want to leave phone design and manufacturing in the "hands of others," and wants tighter control over the "material selection, design, services, [and] software and hardware integration."
Microsoft has previously denied plans to launch its own smartphones, and in a fresh statement, without explicitly denying the reports, simply reiterated its general stance in working with its hardware partners.
The so-called "surface phone" may be a push by Microsoft into the mainstream smartphone market, or potentially as it claims with its Surface tablet, more of a proof of concept that will be sold to drive developments by other hardware vendors.
