Thailand's DTAC Plans $1.3 Billion Investment in 3G Network

Published on:

Thailand based Total Access Communication (DTAC) has said that it plans to slow the expansion of its existing 3G network in favour of a service based on the 2.1Ghz spectrum, if it wins spectrum in the upcoming auction.

The company has been offering 3G services on its existing 850Mhz spectrum in advance of the long-delayed formal 3G license auction. The expectation is that the lower frequency spectrum will be reserved for rural areas.

The company also plans to expand its 3G capable base stations to 5,000 by the end of this year - up from the current tally of 3,500. The investment in the 3G network is expected to reach Bt40 billion (US$1.3 billion) over the next three years.

Subject to a successful spectum auction, the company aims to migrate its entire GSM customer base to 3G services within four years. DTAC is then planning to launch LTE services on its 1800Mhz spectrum.

The regulator, the NBTC is due to auction off the 2.1Ghz spectrum on the 16th October.
