Philippine Networks Allowed to Share Radio Spectrum
Published on:
Philippine regulators have approved plans by two of the country's mobile networks to share some of their radio spectrum in order to reduce network congestion.
There have been rising complaints about poor network quality over the past year, and the regulator recently said it was considering a ban on the networks signing up new customers until QoS improved.
The agency has allowed the joint use by Globe and Bayan Telecommunications of 10MHz of 1800Mhz spectrum assigned to Bayan. Smart and Digital Mobile were also allowed to share Smart's 800MHz; 900Mhz; 1800MHz; 2100Mhz spectrum and Digital Mobile's 1800Mhz; 2100MHz spectrum.
It also approved deals to share 800Mhz spectrum by Smart and Smart Broadband.
"The primary purpose of the joint use is to improve efficiency and decongest the networks of the telcos to improve their services and comply with the QOS [quality of service] prescribed by the commission," said the NTC.
"Due to the rising incidence of mobile communications complaints on blocked calls or grade of service, drop calls and signal quality, and in line with the NTC mandate…the NTC has granted the telcos' requests."
