Thailand's Regulator Mulls Extending 2G Spectrum Licenses

Published on:

Thailand's telecoms regulator may grant short-term extensions on GSM licenses in the 1800Mhz bands to two mobile networks in order to bring their license expiry dates in to line with the other networks.

TrueMove and AIS subsidiary, DPC both have licenses that expire in September 2013, while DTAC's significantly larger block of radio spectrum does not expire until 2018.

Extending the licenses would enable the regulator, the NBTC to auction off the entire block of 62.5Mhz of spectrum in one go in 2018.

Currently the plans are to recall the expiring licenses next year and resell them for 2G based services, but a delay could allow them to be reused for 4G based services which are expected to be in demand by 2018.

There is also the slight complication that AIS's holdings of 900Mhz spectrum expires in September 2015, and there may be grounds to extend its duration until 2018 as well to ensure a wider auction can be carried out.

All three of Thailand's mobile networks have applied for the 3G license auction which is due to take place later this month.
