Microsoft Wins Patent Lawsuit Against Motorola Mobility

Microsoft has won a patent lawsuit against Motorola Mobility over the use of software based keyboards in its phones. The EU patent No. EP1040406 covers a "soft input panel system and method."
Microsoft can now apply for an enforcement order banning the sale of Motorola phones infringing its patent, although it has to pay $61.4 million as a bond to the courts first. Microsoft has enforced an earlier order which found Motorola Mobilty had infringed patents relating to text messages and its FAT file management system.
In a statement, Microsoft said that it hopes "Motorola will join other Android device makers by taking a license to Microsoft's patented inventions."
Google, which now owns the mobile phone manufacturer said that it is waiting for a full copy of the ruling before deciding if it will appeal.
In a separate case, Microsoft is seeking to enforce the US equivalent of the patent in a Washington court.
