Apple's Latest Maps Upgrade Widely Panned by Users
Published on:
Apple's new iOS 6 software has been widely criticized for the changes it made to its mapping software, which has seen a large number of inaccuracies reported as well as complaints about a reduction in information about rural areas.
Apple used to rely on data provided by Google maps, but as part of its ongoing process of moving away from Google services, the company switched to its own in-house developed platform.
Although the underlying data was supplied by TomTom, that company said it wasn't responsible for how Apple then converted the information into a usable map.
A host of inaccuracies have been reported - and are now being tracked on the inevitable Tumblr blog, as well as complaints that overhead photos in some areas are obscured by clouds.
One of the more widely reported errors for London, UK involved the placement of a long-disused tube station in a nearby field, and claiming that it had reopened to passengers.
