Published on:

Thailand's tourist areas are to get free Wi-Fi hotspot coverage following a decision by the government to subsidise the service.

Two government ministries, the ICT Ministry and the Tourism Ministry have jointly agreed to develop the free Wi-Fi service which will cover 1,615 tourist destinations across the country.

The ICT Ministry assigned TOT and CAT Telecom to install the service in 253 spots in Bangkok, 446 in the Central region, 201 in the East, 323 in the South, 67 in the Northeast, and 325 in the North.

The move is aimed at boosting the tourism industry and may be followed up with QR codes leading to mobile websites offering local information services.
