Gogo Expands In-Flight Wi-Fi Service and Hikes Usage Fees

In-flight internet connectivity provider, Gogo announced today that it will expand its wireless in-flight entertainment product -- Gogo Vision -- across the entire two-class and Delta Connection fleet of Gogo equipped aircraft.
Installations are expected to begin in 2012 on Delta's domestic fleet, with completion expected by 2013 and new international Wi-Fi service including Gogo Vision competed by the end of 2015. When complete, Delta will have more than 950 aircraft equipped with Gogo connectivity and Gogo Vision.
In addition to the installation of Gogo Vision, Delta has also committed to upgrading its fleet to Gogo's next generation connectivity solution, ATG-4, which is expected to enhance its existing air to ground network and improving capacity to the aircraft.
However, in related news the company has also quietly raised the fee it charges for the service on some flights. The company appears to have dropped the per-flight charge and is now charging by the hour for internet access.
One example given was that a service that used to cost US$17.95 for Wi-Fi on a long flight on Virgin America now costs at least US$30.
The company has however retained its monthly subscription service for regular users and the costs for that are unchanged at between US$35-$40 per month.
