Virgin Mobile in Talks to Launch Turkish MVNO
Published on:
Multinational MVNO, Virgin Mobile is reportedly in talks to secure an agreement to launch services in Turkey.
Citing sources, the Reuters news agency said that the company wants to enter the fast growing market and was talking to various parties. In addition to the local market, there is a sizeable ex-pat customer base across Europe where Virgin Mobile already has operations.
Virgin Group has confirmed that it is in preliminary talks with several Turkish mobile networks, but did not comment further. The regulator confirmed that the company has not filed an application yet for an MVNO license in the country.
There is a taxation issue which may hold up any launch though as the government levies a 15% tax on sales from mobile the MVNO and its hosting network, which pushes up retail prices. Virgin is typically a lower cost company and may find the higher fees harder to market to its traditional youth market.
