Fon Signs Up 7 Millionth Wi-Fi Hotspot

Published on:

The Wi-Fi hotspot sharing service, Fon says that it has signed up its 7 millionth hotspot. The announcement, on its blog, comes just a few months after the company reached 6 million hotspots.

Fon signs deals with telecoms networks to encourage domestic Wi-Fi routers to make a portion of their bandwidth available for public use by other Fin subscribers. The hotspot owner retains priority over traffic for their own devices, while releasing the surplus.

Users can either buy a dedicated Fon router from the company, or more usually they get the facility built-in to the Wi-Fi router from their existing ISP.
