Huawei Said to Be Working on Own Smartphone OS

Huawei is reported to be working on its own smartphone OS as it seeks to reduce the risks associated with future reliance on Android and Microsoft based platforms.
The company also plans to massively ramp up development of its own handset semiconductor chipsets. Huawei's founder, Ren Zhengfei said that Huawei plans to invest US$400 million and will look to hire 20,000 employees in entering the handset chip sector
The in-house chipsets would be designed to support the new smartphone operating software, but the OS will also be enabled to work on 3rd-party supplied chipsets.
Citing comments by the CEO, Marbridge Consulting said that the company's silicon subsidiary, HiSilicon Technologies is a key player in the process and a long-term strategic investment, but that the company "must stand on its own two feet" in order to reduce Huawei's dependence on US chipset providers.
