Indian Telcos Ignore Government Order to Block Twitter
Published on:
A number of Indian telecoms networks have disobeyed a government order - because it was technically impossible to comply with it in the first place.
The Home Ministry had ordered a number of companies to block the use of the Twitter website, but only in a number of specific states where violent clashes have been taking place over the past few weeks.
However, the telecoms networks said it was technically impossible for them to block access to websites on a state-by-state basis as customer IP addresses were not allocated in that manner.
The order calling for blocking of the Twitter service was sent to to BSNL, Tata Communications, Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular, RCom and the Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI).
