Smaller Kenyan Network Petition for Lower Mobile Termination Rates

Published on:

Kenyan mobile networks, Yu and Airtel are petitioning to have mobile termination rates lowered, as per stalled plans by the regulator.

The mobile termination rate (MTR) was due to fall each year, but was frozen last year by the regulator as it carries out a review into the matter.

Airtel petitioned Prime Minister Raila Odinga earlier this week to intervene in the MTR dispute and push the regulator to resume the downward glidepath it had previously approved. Rival network, Yu has now joined the petition.

The country's dominant mobile network, Safaricom opposes the cuts, which would affect its inbound revenues more than the smaller networks, but the company also argued that with the industry losing money further price cuts are unwise.
