Philippine Network Cuts Electricity Consumption by 20 Percent

Philippines based mobile network, Smart Communications says that it has cut its network's power consumption by 20 percent as a result of its multi-billion peso mobile network upgrade.
The energy efficiency is attributed to the installation of modernized Single RAN equipment now being used across Smart's network of over 11,600 base stations all over the country.
Before the modernization, Smart was using multiple radio cabinets that need to be powered by electricity in each base station. After the modernization, these radio cabinets have been reduced to just one or two.
Even with the fewer radio cabinets, Smart said its network capacity is still much higher compared to the legacy equipment.
The Multi-Standard Radio Base Station facilities that were installed in all its cell sites can also be upgraded to offer LTE services through software upgrades and some additional hardware equipment. This would mean Smart would have to shell out minimum capital expenditure to upgrade its network in future.
The P67-billion (US$1.6 billion) network modernization program that was already completed by Smart would also effectively translate to a significantly lower capital outlay for each base station.
"The modernization project would add much-needed extra capacity, prepare Smart for a seamless transition to 4G, and produce sizable capital and operating expenditures savings," said Ramon Isberto, head of Smart Public Affairs.
"With the mobile network upgrade, we would not only be able to provide better services to our subscribers, we are also more energy efficient and given the size of our network, that means a lot," added Isberto.
