SmarTone Fined for Incorrect GPRS Download Costs

Published on:

Hong Kong based SmarTone has been fined by the Communications Authority following a complaint of overcharging for accessing websites via a GPRS download.

The Authority received a complaint about the mobile network's advertising claim that the cost of downloading a page within SmarTone's own iN! WAP service cost an "average 10 cents per page"

The complainant alleged that the representations were misleading or deceptive as he was charged substantially higher than that rate. SmarTone amended the claim shortly after the complaint was made.

However, the company was fined HK$100,000 (US$12,890) for breaches of the license conditions. The Authority noted the speed at which the correction was made and that only one complaint had been made against the company.
