MTN Accused of Infringing Mobile Money Services Patent

Published on:

A South African court has ruled that local mobile network, MTN and the banking group, Standard Bank had both infringed a mobile payments patent held by 3MFuture Africa.

The patent covered a technique that enables users to disable their payment cards using their mobile phone.

The Judge, Mr Justice Tati Makgoka ruled that the mobile network and its banking partner had offered the infringing service until the middle of January this year, after which it disabled the facility.

It was alleged that Standard Bank had approached 3MFuture Africa regarding a partnership, then launched the service after claiming it wasn't interested.

However, the patent was itself also provisionally revoked, pending appeal by 3MFuture Africa to amend it.
