Intensity of Competition Continues to Build in German Mobile Services
Published on:
The intensity of competition in Germany's mobile services has continued to grow, as indicated by current data from mobile operators provided to the telecoms regulator. Both the E-Plus Group and Telefónica with the O2 brand were able to increase their market share in the first half of 2012. Both operators now have a combined total of over 42 million customers.
""I am very pleased that there is intense competition between providers. The companies court customers with innovative products. From a consumer perspective, it's beneficial to be able to select the best product for their needs from a range of several"", emphasised Jochen Homann, Bundesnetzagentur President.
With almost 36 million customers, Vodafone remains the operator with the largest market share (31.5 percent). However, the gap by which it leads Telekom (31.2 percent) has shrunk. The market share of E-Plus is almost 21 percent, while Telefónica has a share of almost 17 percent.
The number of mobile subscribers in Germany remained more or less constant in the second quarter of 2012, at approx. 114m. Each person still possesses on average approx. 1.4 SIM cards. Most subscribers use a prepaid SIM card.
