Kenyan Politician Seeks Delay to Fake-Phone Switch Off Date

Published on:

A Kenyan politician is seeking a court order to forbid the telecoms regulator's plans to disconnect counterfeit mobile phones.

The regulator, the CCK has been planning to order the networks to block fake phones for over a year, and has delayed the switch-off date a couple of times, before settling on the end of September as the final cut off point.

Embakasi MP Ferdinand Waititu is now seeking an urgent court order overturning that decision, claiming that it violates customer privacy and consumer rights.

He argues that the decision is arbitrary and wants another delay until the end of this year to give Kenyans more time to replace their handsets.

According to industry statistics by the Commission, close to 3 million mobile phones in the Kenyan market are counterfeit, translating to about 10% of all the active mobile devices in the country.
