Econet Wireless Restores Connection to State-Owned Rival

Published on:

Zimbabwe's Econet Wireless has been forced to restore interconnection with its rival network, NetOne a day after it suspended the connection over an unpaid bills dispute.

Econet Wireless claims that NetOne owes it US$20.4 million in unpaid termination fees which date back to May 2009.

After blocking inbound calls from NetOne yesterday, the network said today it was restoring the service following a move by NetOne to seek a court order and threats to have the board of directors arrested. NetOne is owned by the government and has political connections and said that it would report the issue to the police.

The dispute has not been settled though, and both sides are still preparing to file arguments with the court.

"Econet has taken a unilateral decision to reconnect NetOne considering both the negative impact on the subscribers and the unreasonable stance that NetOne took of disregarding the impact of the disconnection," Econet's lawyer Harrison Nkomo said.
