Zimbabwe Regulator Push for More Rural Mobile Phone Coverage

Published on:

Zimbabwe's Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) has issued a tender for 43 base stations which it intends to deploy in regional areas.

The contract is worth around US$24 million and will be funded from the Universal Service Fund, which is levied on the networks to cover the cost of subsidising services in uneconomical areas.

"Tenders are invited from established and qualified civil and structural engineering companies for the design and installation of passive telecommunications infrastructure in designated rural areas of Zimbabwe under the USF," the tedner document said.

The networks have been critisied for not expanding their networks into rural areas, although they counter that the difficulties with the local economy and sanctions against the government made raising funds to pay for equipment difficult.
