Everything Everywhere Close to Selling Block of Surplus 1800Mhz Spectrum

Published on:

In addition to securing permission to reuse its 1800Mhz spectrum for LTE services, UK based Everything Everywhere is also reported to be close to a deal to sell some of that 1800Mhz spectrum to rival network, Hutchison 3G UK.

Everything Everywhere is required to dispose of 2x15 MHz of its 60Mhz worth of spectrum as a condition for the merger of the Orange and T-Mobile networks.

Citing people with knowledge of the discussions, the Financial Times noted that the talks had not been finalised, but a sale is imminent. The deal could be worth around £200 million, and give Hutchison 3G UK (which trades as Three) a block of LTE capable radio spectrum at a far lower price than it might have to pay in next year's 4G license auction.

Alternatively the company could roll out a GSM based fallback network to fill in coverage holes which emerge when the WCDMA based 3G network is under heavy load. The lack of a fall-back service has been a point of complaint amongst Three customers for some time.

The FT noted that Vodafone and O2 have also been interested in the spectrum on offer. If it is not sold by next September, then it has to be surrendered back to the regulator.
