Joke Pregnancy App for IPhones Sparks Controversy

Published on:

An image manipulation app for the Apple iPhone has been criticized by family planning groups as irresponsible. The app lets the user take a photo of themselves, then it modifies them to look as if they are 9-months pregnant.

Described jokingly as being able to "increase teen pregnancy" at the click of a button, the app have proven hugely popular in Australia, where the developers are based.

"Knocked App means you can meet someone and conceive with them with just the press of a button," the company claimed on its app store description.

Although meant as a joke, and one which has proven popular, Joanne Ramadge, chief executive officer of Sexual Health and Family Planning Australia said "I think it's absolutely dreadful,"

"Teenage pregnancy is an extremely serious issue and to treat it in such a trivial way is not a considered or helpful approach" she added.

She also expressed concerns that photos of other people could be modified without their permission and uploaded to places such as Facebook, describing such situations as "horrifying and devastating for some people."

Which is also seems to be quite a damning indictment of being pregnant.

Worth noting though that Apple took two months to approve the app for sale though, when the usual turnaround time is less than two weeks.
