South Korean Networks Want LTE Support in Apple's iPhone 5
Published on:
Two of South Korea's largest mobile networks, SK Telecom and Korea Telecom (KT) are reported to be in talks with Apple concerning support for their LTE networks in the forthcoming iPhone 5 handset.
The two networks currently sell the iPhone, but the country's third network, LG Uplus does not as it's radio spectrum is incompatible with the handset.
Citing unnamed sources, the Korea Times said that KT is in negotiation with Apple to persuade it to support KT's 1800Mhz frequency in Korea for the upcoming iPhone. Rival network, KT is using the 800Mhz bands for its LTE network.
Apple has come under criticism in the past for launching LTE capable iPads, and selling them globally, but with LTE functionality that doesn't work outside the USA.
"If Apple's upcoming iPhone again fails to support LTE bandwidths, then this would be a very disappointing scenario as LTE is everywhere in Korea," a high-ranking SK Telecom executive told the newspaper.
The number of LTE subscribers in Korea had reached 8.4 million by the end of July, and is expected to pass 16 million by the end of this year.
