Nokia Says Windows Phone 8 Based Smartphone is Imminent

­Nokia will show off a new Windows Phone 8 based smartphone shortly, the company's CEO, Stephen Elop has confirmed.

The company is known to be planning such a device, but the launch date was uncertain, with recent speculation that it may be announced as a spoiler to Apple's expected iPhone 5 announcement next month.

The company is due to hold a trade show on the 5th-6th September, a week before Apple's own expected announcement. However, Nokia tends to be slower at getting products into retail stores than Apple, so the actual sales launch is still uncertain.

Although he wouldn't be drawn on an exact date, Elop told the Reuters news agency that the new smartphone would be released in the "relatively near term".

On the weak performance of the Windows Phone handsets since the company made the switchover, he was defiant about sticking with the OS.

"In today's war ... (between) Android, Apple and Windows, we are very clear, we are fighting that with the Windows phone," said Elop,
