Nigerian CDMA Networks Close to Merger Deal - Migrating to LTE

Published on:

Nigeria's three CDMA network operators are reported to be close to concluding a merger agreement that would see them form a new company to be known as Capcom.

The shareholders of Multi Links, Starcomms and MTS are also said to have pumped US$200 million into the merged entity to help it consolidate their disparate networks.

However, the new company would not aim to restart the struggling CDMA industry in the country and would look to migrate over to LTE services by reusing its existing 20Mhz of 1900Mhz spectrum.

The combined company would have a current customer base of just 160,000 data customers.

Migrating to LTE would however almost certainly need regulatory permission, which adds an element of risk to the venture.
