Research in Motion Ready to License BlackBerry OS to Other Companies

Struggling smartphone manufacturer, Research in Motion says that its delayed BlackBerry 10 operating system has entered final testing stages. The company is also looking at licensing the OS to other companies.
The BlackBerry 10 was built on a software platform, QNX, which is also used in automotive and industrial plants.
"QNX is already licensed across the automotive sector --we could do that with BB10 if we chose to," Heins, who has begun to carry a BB10 phone for his own use, said in an interview at Bloomberg's headquarters in New York. "The platform can be licensed."

The company has built the new OS to replace its legacy platforms and based it on QNX, a company that RIM bought in 2010. The company has said that it looks to license more of its technologies to other companies as it seeks to turn around its finances.
The growing duopoly of Android/Apple provides a window for the company as mobile networks are wary of being reliant on just two software platforms.
