South Korean Networks to Be Investigated Following Customer Data Leaks

Published on:

South Korea's telecoms regulator, the KCC says that it intends to increase its supervision of the country's three mobile networks following a spate of customer data leaks.

The announcement follows the latest breach of customer privacy when Korea Telecom (KT) admitted that a hacker had accessed its systems last month.

The KCC has set up a team of inspectors to go to each of the networks and carry out audits on their data integrity. The regulator is reacting to customer anger over the issue, which was heightened by the apparent delays between discovering data leaks and notifying the affected customers.

Two men have been arrested on charges of accessing customer data for some 8.7 million accounts and selling it to marketing companies.

The KCC said its jurisdiction will extend beyond the headquarters of the telecom companies to their nationwide branches and sales agents.

The regulator added that it will start regular checks to verify how networks are protecting customer information and will make disclosures if it discovers problems.
