In a brief statement, USA based Sprint Nextel has announced that its President, Strategic Planning and Initiatives, Keith Cowan is leaving the company.

Cowan has served in this role since July 2007. In addition, he served as the interim President of the CDMA Business Unit from November 2008 to May 2009.

The move has been welcomed by the stock market, with the company's shares rising by over 3 percent after the news was announced. He is to leave the company at the end of next month.

The company did not elaborate on why he is leaving, although reports suggest it was a mutual decision. Cowan was known for his tough approach to securing a deal, but had upset people on Wall Street and within the industry.
