Brazil May Reimpose Sales Ban on Mobile Networks
Published on:
Brazil's telecoms regulator may consider imposing another ban on signing up new customers if the mobile networks don't improve their network quality of service in the short term.
The regulator temporarily banned sales two weeks ago pending reports from the networks on how they could redirect investment plans to address the issues being raised by customer complaints.
Communications Minister Paulo Bernardo has now said that he would support a second sales ban if necessary.
For their part, the networks complained about the difficulties in securing permission for additional base stations in rural areas and high taxes that restrict their investment plans. The Minister said that both issues would be looked at, although he expects more network infrastructure sharing to be adopted in future if they relax the planning laws.
In related news, he also confirmed that the regulator will auction off blocks of 700Mhz spectrum next year for use by 4G services. The radio spectrum is currently occupied by analogue television services.
