YouTube App Removed from Next Version of iPhone Operating System

Published on:

Apple has confirmed that it will be removing a YouTube app from the next version of its iPhone software when it is released next month.

The company said that it had removed the app from the updated version of the smartphone OS because its licence to produce the program had expired.

The company added that Google is working on a replacement app which it will offer to iPhone users.

The news that the new OS would lack the popular app was revealed when the latest developer version of the software was released yesterday. The absence of the YouTube app prompted urgent questions on developer forums and the subsequent Apple statement.

The Apple developed YouTube app has been available on all versions of the iPhone since its launch in 2007.

Users will still be able to watch YouTube videos through the web browser though - it is just the dedicated app that is missing. Once Google launches its own replacement, it should also gain more control over embedding adverts into the service, but will then be reliant on Apple's famously twitchy app approvals process.
