France Passes 70 Million Mobile Subscriber Landmark

Published on:

The French telecoms regulator, Arcep has announced that there were 70.4 million mobile subscribers in France in the second quarter of 2012. Net quarterly growth was virtually double what it was the year before: 900,000 additional customers in Q2 2012, compared to 500,000 in Q2 2011. This is the second highest rate of Q2 quarterly increase in the past ten years.

Growth in the first quarter of the year had already been exceptionally high, with 900,000 additional SIM cards coming into use.

After a record 2.6 million number portability requests in Q1, the figure dropped to "only" 1.4 million in the second quarter, or double the number of portability requests processed in Q2 2011.

The pay-as-you-go customer base grew by 1.1 million during the quarter, with PAYG now representing 26.6% of all accounts, versus 19% to 20% from 2008 to 2011. More than half of all active customers use multimedia services, or 33 million in the month of June 2012.

Network operators are reporting an additional 695,000 customers, which brings the total base in Metropolitan France to 60.1 million customers. MVNOs' market share increased slightly during the quarter - from 11.21% in Q1 2012 to 11.35% in Q2 2012 - adding 191,000 SIM cards to their roster. Mobile virtual network operators were serving a total 7.7 million accounts in June 2012.
