Apple Closes MobileMe Service and Directs Users to ICloud
Published on:
Apple has finally closed down its little-loved cloud storage service, MobileMe. The service was due to close anyway after the company decided to replace it with its revamped storage service, the iCloud.
MobileMe originally launched in 2008 and offered a way to sync iPhone details with computer based contact services and websites. It also offered an online file storage service.
However, at US$99 per year it proved expensive compared to the competition, and reliability issues caused reviews and users to critisise the product. In an internal email sent to Apple employees in August 2008, Steve Jobs admitted that MobileMe was launched too hurriedly and "not up to Apple's standards".
Apple announced the iCloud last year and gave MobileMe users until yesterday to migrate their content to the new platform. The MobileMe website now redirects users to the iCloud website and puts up an closed sign for users.
