Thai Network Calls for Lower 3G License Prices

Thailand's True Corp has called on the telecoms regulator to lower the cost of 3G licenses, in order to support the country's own mobile networks.
The regulator has set the reserve price for a block of 5Mhz spectum in the 2.1Ghz bands at THB4.5 billion (US$111.million). The auction is expected to take place in October following several years of delays.
The company's CFO, Noppadol Dej-udom said that a lower price and more lenient payment terms would help it to bid for spectrum against the deeper pockets of foreign backed mobile networks.
The company's main rivals are AIS, controlled by SingTel and Dtac, which is controlled by Telenor.
Bidders are also required to place a deposit of 1.35 billion baht just to join the auction, which will offer 9 blocks with no company allowed to buy more than four blocks each.
