Nokia Offering Forthcoming Smartphone to Operators on Exclusive Basis

Published on:

Nokia is reported to be in talks with several European mobile networks offering them exclusive access to its forthcoming Windows Phone 8 based smartphone, in exchange for substantial marketing support.

The move which was tried with AT&T in the USA would be a marked departure for Nokia which while offering to customise handsets for operators has been traditionally wary of exclusive sales agreements.

Citing a person familiar with the talks, the Financial Times said that the exclusivity agreement would also give the chosen operator some form of financial incentive to ensure sales of the handset are a success.

Mobile networks are known to be wary of an Apple/Android duopoly dominating the handset market, but it is now less certain that the Nokia-Microsoft alliance can break that dominance of the smartphone market.
