Former Motorola Salesman Charged with Leaking Trade Secrets to HTC and Apple

Police in South Korea have charged a former Motorola salesman with leaking trade secrets to rivals, HTC and Apple

The 38-year-old Korean, surnamed Kim was arrested and charged with disclosing the trade secrets after he accepted a position with HTC last April.

Police suspect that Kim also obtained information about 1,000 Motorola phone stores and 18,000 employees from a former colleague, who was also arrested on the same charge.

Kim worked for HTC for just four months after which he took a position at Apple, where it is suspected he took advantage of what he had learnt at both Motorola and HTC.

Police told the Yonhap news agency that they have launched the investigation at the request of Motorola, which claimed US$87.6 million in damages caused by the alleged leak.

"It seems that the crimes were committed by the individuals. We haven't found evidence that the rival companies were involved in the alleged leak," a senior official at the agency said.
