Daily Limit on Text Messages Overturned by Indian Courts

Published on:

A limit on the number of text messages an individual can send per day in India has been overturned by both the Delhi High Court and the Telecom Disputes Settlement Appellate Tribunal in separate rulings.

The limit of 200 messages per day would satisfy all but the most devoted of text messaging users, and was imposed to help clamp down on complaints about spam messages being sent. The limit was originally 100 messages per day, but this was lifted to 200 in November following protests.

However, two separate complaints challenged the limit as being arbitrary and should not be applied to individual users.

The High Court overturned the limit, but has allowed the regulator to develop alternative methods to control spam messages.
