Apple Investigating Claims of In-App Payment Hack

Published on:

Apple has confirmed that it is investigating reports of a software hack that allows iPhone users to bypass payment for in-app purchases.

In-App purchases are often used by free apps that then charge to unlock additional services or features within the app.

A software developer demonstrated the hack by posting a video on Google's YouTube service, which showed him installing certificates on the handset and modifying the Wi-Fi settings. The video has since been removed from YouTube following a complaint by Apple.

However, the bypass sends information via the hackers own webserver, which is itself a serious security risk for the users.

Apple is looking into the report.

"The security of the App Store is incredibly important to us and the developer community," said Natalie Harrison, an Apple spokeswoman, in a statement. "We take reports of fraudulent activity very seriously, and we are investigating."

The bypass doesn't work for all apps though, and developers who use Apple's payment verification process are able to disable the download.
