Bangladesh's Teletalk to Launch 3G Services in September

Published on:

Bangladesh's state-owned mobile network, Teletalk has confirmed that it will launch 3G services this coming September, with coverage available initially in the capital city.

The government has not issued 3G licenses yet, but has previously said that the state-owned operator would get a head start over the private companies.

Last year, the Telecoms minister Raziuddin Ahmed Razu also said that the state-owned telco would get a six month exclusivity before the other networks can launch their services, which suggests that the other networks will be able to launch services next March.

It is expected under the current draft proposals that three more licenses will be issued. There are currently six private networks operating, so three of them will lose out.

As with many state-owned telcos in competitive markets, Teletalk's market share is tiny. The company is estimated to have around 1.35 million customers, in a market with 90 million mobile phone subscriptions.
